The Wall Street Journal: Daniel Radcliffe on his Harry Potter specs, his favorite time killers and iPhone imperatives

The Wall Street Journal has put a new article online in which Daniel talks about his Harry Potter spectacles, one of his favorite Podcasts, Fantasy Football, and more. The text is edited from an interview by Chris Kornelis.

On his Favorite Podcast
The “How Did This Get Made?” podcast is one of my favorite things to listen to. It’s three very, very funny people talking generally with other very funny people. It’s a dissection of crazy movies, not even necessarily bad ones—though a lot of them are bad movies. What I think I love about it is there’s a lot of respect in the way they talk about the film. They have an appreciation for the fact that getting any film made is basically a victory. They do make fun of them, obviously, but there’s a feeling of celebration about it, which is really lovely. Everyone should listen to it.

On Fantast Football
I’ve got all my fantasy football apps on my phone: NFL Fantasy Football and Yahoo Fantasy Football. And I’m on them fairly constantly. I was going to say from Thursday to Monday, but then I realized that it’s an all-week thing. I’m in two leagues. I know people who are in so many more than that, and I have no idea how they cope. The level of stress it brings into my life as it is…I don’t know how anyone could possibly deal with more than two leagues.

On running socks
I feel like a good pair of running socks is essential. When I first started running, I got a lot of blisters. The Wrightsock Running II socks have this sort of double layer inside them. They save my life.

On his Harry Potter glasses
I did take a pair of the glasses with me [from the “Harry Potter” set]. But they are not practical. It amazes most people to find out that they did not have lenses in them most of the time. I don’t keep the glasses out, but if anyone really wanted to try them on, they could. No one’s ever asked, which I’m unhappy about.

I’m in, as most actors are in some way, a sort of a semi-long distance relationship a lot of the time. I don’t know how people did it before Skype and FaceTime existed. Even if the signal is bad and the image is freezing, you’re still getting to see the other person’s face. That’s very important.

On the new iPhones
I have one of the new iPhones without the headphone jack, which I’m still very distressed about. The headphone jack adapter that allows you to plug your old headphones into your new iPhone is an actual tech essential. I just can’t quite bring myself to wear the wireless AirPods, or whatever they’re called. They look a bit silly, but it’s more that I know I will lose them and that’s really annoying.

On the app Word Warp
My app for killing time is Word Warp. You just have to find as many words within a six-letter word as possible. Though it’s probably a complete illusion, I feel like doing anagrams helps my brain do something more productive than playing other games.

Daniel Radcliffe on Harry Potter Horcrux theory "I feel like that one ― that’s definitely a good one.”

During the press junket for Jungle The Huffington Post brought up this Harry Potter Horcrux theory which popped up online years ago and asked Daniel if it could explain why the Dursleys were so mean to Harry.

Here's what he said:
Oh OK, so it affects the behavior of people around it,” he said. “That’s interesting, yeah.”

Radcliffe continued, “Yeah, that’s definitely the first time I’ve heard that one. It’s definitely interesting because it sort of posits a world where these people only known to be a certain way. Actually if you remove him from the situation, [they] would have been quite a nice, friendly family.”

Having been there for Richard Griffiths’ (Vernon) and Fiona Shaw’s (Petunia) performances,” Radcliffe said, “I feel like it was more they just hated having this kid around.”

“But I think that’s definitely a cool theory,” he added. “Has anyone asked Jo Rowling what she thinks of that one yet? I feel like that one ― that’s definitely a good one.”
J.K. Rowling doesn’t mention if Harry being a Horcrux contributed to the Dursleys’ hatred, but has written about the Dursley’s dislike for Harry on pottermore.com.
